How to Decorate a Wooden Recipe Box

Kitchen Decor

The under the lid of the recipe box sitting high on the shelf in your kitchen cupboard rests a treasure trove of heirloom meals and desserts garnered from books, magazines, and your mother and grandmothers own heads. These recipes not only bring your family together for meals, but can be a form of spreading the love through the community. Such important treasures on display in your kitchen, why a settle for a boring wooden recipe box with no flair?

It is easy to decorate a wooden recipe box to make it just as exciting and homey as the tastes of the food found within. To do this, all you need of various magazines, especially cooking and women’s magazines, clear drying craft glue, scissors, water, a paintbrush, and a small bowl.

Since this small wooden box is designed to hold recipes, the first thing you probably want to do is identify it clearly as a recipe box. Search through various cooking and women’s magazines for the word recipe or recipes written in attractive script or some other font you like the look of. Cut the word out leaving only a very narrow margin of paper around all sides of the letters.

The size of the wooden recipe box will determine the number and size of the pictures you need to decorate it. Turn back to the magazine’s to find pictures of food, flowers, or other designs that match your kitchen decor. Cut these out, following the same rule of leaving only a small amount of paper around the edge. If the graphic or picture you are cutting out has a clearly defined edge, cut carefully directly along it.

In a small bowl, mix the clear drying craft glue and a small amount of water until you have an adhesive with a runny consistency. Use the paintbrush to lay a thin film of the glue water mixture on the back of the paper patterns. Before sticking them to the wooden recipe box, make a careful plan where you will put them all. Of course the word recipe should appear on the top or front of the box. You do not want the rest of the box to be too cluttered or it will not look very good.

After all the cutout pieces of paper are attached to the one recipe box, paint a thin layer of the gloom water mixture over the entire thing to seal it. Allow this to dry thoroughly between applications for a smooth finish.

Inexpensive Christmas Decorating, Decorate Your Home for the Holidays!

Kids Room Decor

Did you know that NORAD tracks Santa’s journey every Christmas eve? Santa hasn’t left yet but you can still visit NORAD for fun and updates. NORAD Santa Tracker and other Christmas Trivia.

It’s time to break out the tinsel and string up the lights because the holidays are here! There is no end to the possibilities when it comes to decorating. Whatever you can come up with WORKS! You don’t have to fuss over matching and consistency of design. Everything to do with the holiday season works together, no matter the color, the theme or the reason you celebrate. Have fun with it; don’t stress over it; decorate with what you like; and party like it’s 2009!!

Here are some suggestions for decor that you may not have thought of and that may set you on your way and put you in the mood for some decorating fun!

Start with your dining room table. The more miscellaneous goodies sitting on it, the better. Grab a holiday table cloth and some placemats at your local department store (Wal-mart) and you are on your way!

Candle holders for small candles such as tealights are inexpensive and give your home a cozy feel when placed in every room. If you can’t find them with a holiday theme, visit your local thrift store and grab some colored glasses and put tealights in them.

Set things on your kitchen counter. A holiday cookie jar, a white candle and a Santa calendar to count down the days make this kitchen counter very festive!

A pitcher and glasses mismatched and pieced together from the local thrift store can be functional OR decorative. If you don’t want to use them for holiday drinks, simply put shiney balls or tinsel in them!

If you can’t think of ways to make your kitchen festive, just put some holiday snacks in a basket!

Counting down the days until Christmas isn’t just for the kids. The countdown calendar in this photo is a Dollar Store find. If you can’t find one, make one! Construction paper and beans, or garland and some imagination can do the trick!

You can never have too many candles. Just putting simple tealights in a dish creates a holiday mood. You can make your own oil candles using a cotton ball and oil. Put it in a colored glass and voila! Instant holiday candle.

Do you have an assortment of holiday tins that have accumulated over the years? Set them about your house. These in the photo are playing cards and paper coasters.

Use an inexpensive Christmas train to go around your tree. The kids love it and the cats go nuts!

Spice up that cheap plastic wreath with some cheap plastic balls hanging from a string! Top with a bow.

Frosty the Snowman has to be part of the holiday. It doesn’t matter what he’s made of, how big he is, or how much he costs, just make sure he’s invited!

There’s no reason you can’t hang a wreath from the light fixture in your hallway! No light fixture? Use a pushpin!

Some people end up with waaay too many Santa hats. They seem to multiply from year to year. These are laying on the pool table and guests are encouraged to wear one when they visit, and encouraged to take one home.

Don’t forget to decorate your doorknobs. Nothing to big and heavy or awkward though.

What about the refrigerator? Magnets! You don’t have to buy them, you can make them. The one on the top is a half walnut, googly eyes and felt glued together with a magnet back to make a magnetic fridge mouse!

The mantle can be simple or cluttered. This one is simple but a cluttered Christmas mantle is OKAY! Just make sure you don’t put anything on it that can’t take the heat of a fire!

Dig out your Christmas and holiday movies and keep them near the DVD player and the remotes.

Put your holiday music in a decorative basket and keep it near the player.

Cloth napkis, plastic garland and plastic napkin holders work as a Great decoration on your table too!

Even silly styrofoam plates add an air of festivity when just sitting on the countertop.

Are your silk plants just sit there looking very UN-holiday? Decorate them with some silk poinsettias.

Back in the kitchen, don’t forget the hotpads/potholders!

The old Coca-cola Christmas Santa is always fun. It doesn’t matter what he’s on, he’s great to have around!

A sleepy Santa needs a special warm place on the hearth.

Everyone has an ugly chair. Throw an inexpensive tree skirt on it and suddenly it’s a FUN chair! I think I’ll leave that one on that chair all year!

Invest in a pair of holiday socks with jingle bells. OR, you can sew jingle bells on ANY socks!

Frosty lends a hand in the kitchen as a spoon rest.

No holiday can have too many stuffed animals. Put them in your window sills, or………

Dig out the old nostagic toys for decor. Remember Wishniks?

Towels don’t have to be functional; just hang one over the cabinet door!

Of course you will want functional holiday towels!

As in every holiday, you should have a toy table. Books, toys and coloring books for the little ones, or big ones, to enjoy. Glitter some pine cones and put candles in a holiday paper plate with plastic garland around them for decoration. Of course, you may not want to light those candles if the kids are after the toys!

Decorate your tree with handmade decorations. Some of the things on this tree are pine cones with red yarn, reindeer made from clothespins and Easy Pipe Cleaner Ornaments!

Top your tree with a big red bow!

The outside doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive to be fun. strings of 150 lights makes this whole front light up delight about worth of lights!

Happy Holidays!!!!!!

Easy Way To Decorate Your Kids Room

Kids Room Decor

Article by Camille Apicella

One of the greatest joys of having a child is decorating his or her room. You have to pick out a theme, decide upon colors, shop for furniture and accessories together – and the most wonderful part of decorating the room is that you’re also bonding with your child! Sometimes, parents make the mistake of just using a very basic theme and bringing in minimalist furniture. Not only will your child be unhappy with the room, but the room itself will be devoid of character. So sit down with your child, and figure out ways to characterize the room with personality. All it needs is imagination and creativity!

One good way to add personality to a room is by deciding upon a suitable theme that will show vitality and creativity. Now you have many different kinds of themes available for boys’ and girl’s rooms, so there are various ways you can play around with the kid’s room decor. Once the theme is selected, reinforce it through wall murals, wall decals and kid’s wall stickers. Select the room’s furniture carefully- choose items that will match the theme, and make certain you’re choosing the furniture wisely. Select good brands, if possible, do your research to get information about the latest trends in construction and use of materials.

Ensure that you’ve made a good buy. Remember to use nice vital colors – perhaps nothing adds character and personality to a kid’s room decor better. The feeling you get from colors can change your mood dramatically – depending upon the colors used, your child will feel energetic and full of vitality or soothed. Nowadays, walls can be painted virtually any color under the sun, so if your son wants to paint his entire room green because he likes the color – don’t pooh-pooh him. With a little creativity and imagination, and perhaps use of textured paint, the room would look fabulous!

You need to discover your own and your child’s personal style, as well as your child’s likes and dislikes. Use items of your child’s liking. If your son likes bicycles, have kid’s wall stickers of bicycles on a certain area of the wall. If your daughter likes clowns, go for a wall mural of clowns. Really, anything’s possible! What inspires you, and what inspires your child? Take heed of your child’s suggestions, and give them priority – after all, it’s your child’s room. Add more characters to the room by having a bulletin board in one corner, to display your kid’s creative artwork. Display photo-frames, and framed pictures around the room – to enhance the sense of personality. Frame pictures of the family, of pets, even of his or her friends. Keeping a picture of your child in the room is a great way to build self-esteem!

Make the look of the room slightly unique. Why go for boring styles of furniture when you can go for beanbags and cushions? Why go for plain looking lamps when you can get them in many different styles and colors? You need to look around, give your child a free rein too, in order to find exactly what you both will like. With a little effort towards creativity and imagination, your kid’s room decor will be full of charm and personality!

Some have suggested that by using mixed patterns in decorating you can re-create a look that you may have seen on television or a magazine. It is the easiest way to make it original and unique to you and your childs style. Decorating a boys room is different than decorating a girls room, not just in color but also in choice of fabric and patterns.

Most childrens rooms will need enough storage to hold all the various toys, as well as a big enough closet for all the clothes. The room needs to have plenty of light and showcase a main interest of the child. Does your kids like to collect books or do they want to be a dancer or a fireman, this are good ways to get the design for your child as they grow.

Especially if your child has asthma or allergies it may be best to leave the paint alone and add decorations on top of the walls, ceilings and floors.

Cleaning the kids bedroom decor can be done on a weekly basis to avoid unnecessary build up of dust and dirt. Childrens furnishings can be delicate at times but most of all it needs to be able to withstand the wear and tear that will happen over a daily period.

Decorate Your Living Room With These Great Ideas

There comes a time when you get tired of your living room décor and probably feel a change can liven up your own life. It’s like wanting to be in new surroundings without sacrificing having to leave the comforts of home. However, coming up with creative decorating ideas for living room can be a bit challenging and might not end up the way you expect them to be. It would be best to do some careful planning and budgeting, because once you start on it there’s no turning back. Here are some tips to consider when putting your decorating ideas for living room into a well laid out plan.

Decide on the Living Room’s Main Function
In deciding which of your decorating ideas for living room to use, determine first the activities that take place in it. Do the children watch their favorite TV shows or movies in the living room or in their own room or den? If you often entertain friends or business associates at home, is there any additional furniture you need to add or remove? Make an inventory of the furniture in your living room and base your decorating ideas for living room on what will make it more functional and cozy at the same time. You may have to remove the home entertainment assembly and replace them with more divans, sofas and useful coffee tables. Your assessment may consider decorating ideas for living room that add more lighting equipment like lamps or chandeliers.

Decide on the Most Important Aspect of your Living Room
In coming up with decorating ideas for living room, think outside the box as to what visitors can focus on to showcase your personality. As friends wait for everyone to gather and engage in some informal conversations, you should have some conversational pieces of items that will showcase your personality.

You may be into collecting some unique items which you would like your friends to feast their eyes on. Rummage through antique shops and probably stumble upon rare finds, you can add them as extra attraction for your living. If you think lighting can be improved by putting a not-too grandiose but unique chandelier, this would be a good start for your decorating ideas for the living room. You can pick up themes and color designs for your throw pillows and lamp shades as well as wall decors or hangers.

Arranging the Furniture
Make sure that your furniture will be arranged in a way that will allow natural flow of traffic. Some decorating ideas for living room can end up into a hodge-podge that can confuse the visitor where to pass or make way for room exits. If you have beautiful outdoor scenery, make sure your guests will be seated in ways that will provide them a good view of this.

Guests should not be seated too close for comfort if your main activity is to receive guests in your living room. Arrange sofas three to four feet apart for enough leg room.   In fact, make sure that in mapping out your decorating ideas for living room, you will not achieve a cluttered look. Keep your decorating ideas for living room focused on the main function of the area and try not having everything. Choose which of your decorating ideas for living room will provide the most function and comfort if entertaining guests are your main concern.
