Up, up and away with bedroom ceiling designs
When it comes to bedroom decorating ideas, many people completely overlook or disregard the ceiling — yet it’s often the first thing we see when we open our eyes in the morning. A bland, blank surface is less than inviting.
The ceiling is your bedroom’s fifth wall. Adding a splash of personality to the décor can be as simple as painting a mural on the ceiling, or adding some glow-in-the-dark star decals or paint to create the illusion of stargazing — an effect known as tromp l’oeil, or “trick of the eye.” For a truly artistic effect, paint in a series of “picture frames” with flowers, birds, butterflies or other objects inside, or a stained glass window. You can even re-create the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel! In the hands of a true artistic talent, your ceiling can be transformed into just about anything that you can imagine.
Even painting the ceiling in a color or simple pattern that contrasts intriguingly with your walls can enhance the bedroom’s design considerably. A high gloss finish can create a watery, reflective effect that is intriguingly modern. For the ultimate luxurious touch, add some gold or silver leaf.
If it’s not too narcissistic for you, a mirror on the ceiling can create a whimsical look. Watching yourself sleep is an interesting concept for many. Using ceiling tiles or wallpaper in a floral or nature-centric design is another idea that can add a folksy appeal. Be cautious, however, as a design that is too busy can actually prove overwhelming, especially in a smaller bedroom.
If you have a high enough ceiling, a fan can be added for increased air circulation, or you can throw in architectural elements such as beams or molding, chandeliers, mobiles, chimes and other hanging objects. For instance, hanging a few strings of white Christmas tree lights, suspended a few inches below the actual ceiling, can give it a look that resembles the Great Hall of Hogwarts. Another intriguing idea for a room with a high ceiling is to install a false ceiling with hidden shelves above it.
With the advent of thin, lightweight LCD televisions has come another intriguing concept: Suspending a large-screen TV from the ceiling. Placing the TV at a slight angle will allow you to sit back comfortably in your bed and watch a movie or favorite TV series without placing undue stress on your neck.
